2. playing grown up

I recently discovered through a bout of Facebook stalking that a large chunk of my high school classmates are married. Mostly to each other, but married nonetheless. The majority have children; some have more than one. Yet, when I look at their photo albums entitled, "MOVING INTO OUR NEW HOUSE!" and "CORRIE'S FIRST BIRTHDAY!", I usually have one thought: are these people just better at pretending to be adults than me?

Because I refuse to believe that they are "for real." 90% of the time, I have to stop myself from indulging childish impulses. Examples, you ask? Taking off all my clothes and jumping into a mall fountain in my bra and underwear. Pranking unsuspecting family members with grade school gags. Telling graphic poop jokes. Have you heard of the missionary toilet paper?

The only time I ever attempt to play "adult" is when I get dressed. There's a sense of safety knowing that you can take it all off in a single instant and slap on your cut off Levi's and a slashed tank at any given second. You can't do that when you have a baby. Or a mortgage.

  1. Oh my god I feel the same way. I don't understand why everyone is in such a rush to be grown up, or act like it. I'm still drawn like a moth to flame to toy aisles or anything sparkly, and I can't imagine losing the feeling of spontaneity that comes with a life unattached. My long-term boyfriend and I may be the last of our friends to tie the knot, and we may get harassed about it all the time, but those unwelcome comments aside, I wouldn't change a thing.

  2. Sometimes adulthood sneaks up on you... like when you and your fiance think it's almost time to start a family and then you get pregnant that week. True story. And suddenly your quaint apartment is looking rather cramped and toys are all over the floor. Trust me, none of your "adult" friends have it together, just gotta fake it til ya make it!

  3. I don't think I'll ever properly 'grow-up' or grow out of those childish things, I come from a family exactly the same though, my Gran & Grandad still act as though they're 17, they are forever being inappropriate or pulling pranks! But I love that & I hope I'll be the same when I'm their age too. Most of my friends are the same, I think I'm currently the last to do anything 'grown up', I don't have a mortgage, a baby, I'm not married (though do have a long term boyfriend) & it'll be a long time before I actually get around to any of those things too! But, I'm very content right now, so why change that? I don't think any of them totally have it together, they're just making the best of what they have & trying to make it all work! :)
That headband is so cute by the way! & the colour blocked clutch!

  4. I love this outfit. And seriously...Every single person i know who is or around my age are married and/or have children. I just always think to myself " thank you" haha.

  5. floral pattern wins for me :)

  7. Shall I be childish and just say "gah I love that shorts graphic and your 10 Crosby ikat shorts with them shoes!"
like an adult I'll say it's ok to not have the same measurement of 'adulthood' as the rest of them. If it makes you feel better in Hong Kong a lot of my friends are late 20s to 30s are still single and still pay rent to a landlord. All the more reason for you to take a gander over to this side of town!

  8. oh man really wishing it were summer down under right now!! love your picks - the 10 crosby ikat shorts and the E&J are my fave ones!
